Truly Set Free From Sin
Set Free to Live a New Life
Sin is portrayed throughout the Bible as a destructive and corrupting force that not only separates humanity from God but also leads to spiritual death and broken relationships. Romans 6:23 clearly states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord,” emphasizing the stark consequences of sin compared to the perfect grace that God offers. Isaiah 59:2 further explains that sin creates a barrier between humanity and God, disrupting the intimate relationship He desires with His people and leading to isolation and spiritual alienation.

In the Old Testament, God repeatedly warned His people of the consequences of continued sinning and disobedience. For instance, in the book of Deuteronomy, God outlines blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. God made it clear that if His people did not turn away from sin, they would face severe consequences.
Throughout biblical accounts, the children of Israel faced numerous consequences for their sins. Here are some of the key repercussions they experienced: These consequences served as both punishment and an opportunity for the Israelites to return to faithfulness and renew their covenant with God.
The consequences of God’s people’s sins were significant and far-reaching, including:
- Losing their inheritance
- The earth opening up and swallowing them whole as punishment for their complaints
- Plagues and disease
- Death and suffering
- Forced to leave the land of hope and promise
- Being defeated by their enemies
- Loss of the protection of God
- Loss of blessings
- Exile and enslavement (captivity)
- Many Judgments
- Internal strife and division (division of the kingdom)
Transforming Verses and Biblical Living
Jesus commanded everyone to stop sinning, but how can we achieve this in our daily lives? Is it truly possible to live without sin, or are we, as mortals, inherently flawed and bound by a sinful nature?
Am I free to choose to obey God, or am I so depraved that I cannot help but to continue to sin every day? These questions often arise for believers who continue to willfully sin. What does the Bible say about continuing to sin after we have been born again and received the knowledge of the truth?
Does being born again as a new creation mean we are totally free from sin, or does it commit us to step away from temptation and actively resist sin?
The Bible provides several teachings on resisting temptation and sin. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, it says, “No temptation has overtaken you”. God always provides a way out when we face the temptation to sin. We must be overcomers (1 John 5:4, Revelation 2:11, Revelation 3:12, Revelation 3:21). Trust in His guidance and strength to overcome!
James 4:7 advises, “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” These verses emphasize the importance of relying on God’s strength to overcome temptation and the assurance that He provides a path to escape sinful situations.
Let Us Be Encouraged By Paul’s Words Regarding Sin
Romans 6:18 “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”
Romans 6:12-13 “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.”
1 Corinthians 15:34 “Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.”
2 Corinthians 7:1 “Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.”
Galatians 5:16 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Ephesians 4:22-24 “To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Colossians 3:5 “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”
1 Thessalonians 5:22 “Abstain from every form of evil.”
Titus 2:11-12 “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”
Let Us Be Encouraged By Jesus’ Command To Stop Sinning
John 5:14 “Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, ‘See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.'”
Luke 13:3 “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
Matthew 5:48 “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Mark 9:43 “And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.”
John 8:11 “She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.'”
Matthew 18:8 “And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.”
We Must Remain In the Love of Jesus and God the Father
I John 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.“
Jude 1:21 “Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.”
John 15:4 “Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.”
John 15:5-6 I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned.”
John 14:23 “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.“
1 John 5:3 “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.“
1 John 2:3 “By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.“
John 14:15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.“
Exodus 20:6 “And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.“
Deuteronomy 7:9 “Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.”
John 15:9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.”
Verses In The Bible About Sinners and The Consequences:
Matthew 25:46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Revelation 21:8 “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Romans 8:2 “Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”
1 John 3:6 “No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.”
Isaiah 1:18 “‘Come now, let us settle the matter,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.’”
Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
How To Be Saved According To Jesus
What Must I Do To Be Saved?
“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30) That question, that has echoed in the hearts of men down through the ages, since the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas. It touches that universal wish in all of us to understand the meaning of our lives and to have hope for the future.
The response given by Paul and Silas is not complicated; they simply say, “And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:31). So, what does it actually mean to believe in or to “believe on”? Check out this amazing article on How To Be Saved According To Jesus
